An off-beat rural location in the heart of the Derbyshire Valleys should not deter the curious and hungry traveller from seeking out the hidden delights awaiting at The Bay Tree Restaurant. Though a winner of many deserved awards, this oasis of New World cooking, run by globetrotting chef Rex Howell and partner Vicki Talbott, derives deserved devotion from an effortless balance of weighty classics such as Escargots Bourguignonne with seasonal local curiosities like Stoned Prune Compote and home marinated Gravlax with a creamy whole grain mustard vinaigrette and Irish oyster in tempura batter topped with Avruga caviar.

For the country conservative in you, though, you will not go far wrong either with the ever-changing house menu; faultless from the “grazing” snacks and nibbles, through well-chosen modern staples, to an exemplary Champagne breakfast and classic Sunday lunch. Seasonal and local are the ingredient by-words here… and it shows. The good, amicable wine list, like the menu and service is from the dining future... not the past…
