Russell Hatton is one of the artists who recognises art as a parallel experience to that of riding a motorbike, moving fast through the landscape culminating in a collection of vivid glossy screen canvases. These are juxtaposed with Russell Hatton's small explosive abstractions which, on closer inspection simulates the vertiginous sensation that occurs when watching the ground shrink from view during a takeoff. The paintings themselves are built up in layers of non traditional paints, and the sprayed layers are overlaid with lacquer, giving a highly polished surface with an illusion of depth. They are finished by a graduated sanding down process. The works thrive on natural light, as their reflective surfaces bounce the light against their colouration and the imagery.
